A mechanical drying process is claimed for the prodn. of largely dry materials (I) from water-moist rubber (II) obtd. by emulsion polymerisation followed by pptn., to give a compact contg. at least 50% rubber. The process comprises feeding the pre-drained rubber into the metering section of a synchronous twin screw extruder with (in the direction of feed) at least two consecutive holding zones and two associated water outlets, at least one kneading zone, a degassing zone and a discharge zone, and removing the water in liq. form via the above outlets.
