A process for the conversion of N2O to NO by heating a gas stream containing N2O by contact with a heated heat exchange surface to a temperature of about 400 to 700 degrees C, and then heating the gas to a temperature of about 850 degrees C while the gas is not in contact with a heated heat exchange surface, and spontaneously and decomposing the N2O and recovering NO.
