Apparatus for maintaining a constant pinch roll pressure in a continuous casting system comprises a pair of fixed bearing blocks and a pair of reciprocable bearing blocks movable toward and away from said fixed blocks, at least one pinch roll journalled in each of said pairs of blocks between which the casting passes, means for continuously measuring the force transmitted to the fixed bearing blocks from the casting, means for transmitting a signal which is proportional to the difference between said measured force and a preselected force, and means for moving said reciprocable bearing blocks in response to said signal. The reciprocable bearing blocks 28 carrying the pinch roll 31 are urged towards the opposing pinch roll 30 by compression springs 42. The blocks 28 are also connected to piston-rods 54 of cylinders 52 which oppose the springs and are connected across the length of the roll by equalizing means including toggles 72. Strain gauges 33 transmit a signal to a differential generator 82, the output of which controls the pressure of fluid supplied to cylinders 52 in accordance whether the pressure between the rolls is greater than or less than the preset roll pressure, thus moving the roll 31 away from the roll 30 against the spring pressure or allowing the spring pressure to move the roll 31 toward the roll 30, to maintain constant the pressure between the rolls. The spacing between the rolls is preset by screws 44 operated by hand wheel 46.
