PURPOSE:To provide easier formation of the oriented liquid crystal macromolecular layer. CONSTITUTION:An orienting substrate 2 which orients liquid crystal macromolecules while conveyed in a certain direction is rubbed by a rubbing roll 1, and the angle alpha between the conveyance direction of the orienting substrate and the orientation direction of macromolecules whose orientation is fixed is controlled according to alpha=tan<-1>(v.sintheta/(V+v.costheta)), where V is the conveyance velocity of the substrate, theta is the angle between the direction perpendicular to the conveyance direction of the orienting substrate and the axis of rotation of the rubbing roll and (v) is the velocity of the rotating rubbing roll on its circumference. On the surface of the orienting substrate which is thus rubbed, a thermotropic liquid crystal macromolecular layer which is oriented in a nematic or twisted nematic state when the layer is in the liquid crystal state, but enters a glass state at temperature below the liquid crystal transition point is formed, and this liquid crystal macromolecular layer is heated and then cooled, thereby obtaining the liquid crystal macromolecule layer whose orientation is fixed in the direction of the angle alpha. |
