The deformable clamping ring is in the form of a toroid with several deep radial external slots (10) running part way along the length of the ring. The slot is cut deeply enough to leave a bridge (11) of deformable material at the bottom of the slot. The bridge deforms radially outward when the ring is compressed. The ring is made of metal or of a plastic material. The preferred shape for the section of the slot is square, simplifying machining or moulding. The ring is fitted over a cable (1) and a two-part threaded sleeve placed over the ring. The threaded sleeve is shaped to compress the ring as the parts of the sleeve are screwed together.
