A first carriage (2) on the machine bed (1) is driven by a spindle (13) from side to side (3) along guide rails (7, 8). The first carriage (2) carries a second carriage (4) which is driven transversely to the first carriage (2) along guide rails (9) by a drive unit (17). A workpiece fixture (6) is mounted on the second carriage (4). The machine bed (1) has a slot (10) for falling swarf running parallel to the guide rails (7, 8) of the first carriage (2). One guide rail (7) is along the top edge of the slot (12), the other (8) is on the inside of the slot (10) on the operator side of the machine. The workpiece fixture (6) has a rotating cutter whose tip lies over the slot (10).
