The grinding equipment (10) has a drive (20) for the grinding or polishing tool (19). A locating and turning mechanism (12) moves the monument (11). The monument (11) is rotated manually in stages. At each stage, the abrasion tool (19) is manually guided over the surfaces to be ground or polished. Movements are electronically measured and stored in a memory unit (23). A control unit (24) uses the data in the memory (23) to repeat automatically the manual movements of the grinding tool (19) and the turning and locating mechanism (12). Other data, e.g. workpiece position, tool pressure, number of passes per stage and tool speed, can be stored.
