In a printer of the kind in which the substrate to be printed upon is fed past an elongate print head which spans the width of the substrate and which prints a whole line of dots at a time, and in which the subject matter to be printed comprises a rasterised frame of tonally gradated pixels, the feed rate of the substrate is determined to be just sufficient to enable printing of the maximum pixel density of the frame, and is kept constant throughout the printing of the whole frame. In a multicolour printer of the kind which prints superimposed colour separations seriatim from successive areas of different respective colours on an ink donor web, the feed rate for all separations of the same frame is determined by the greatest pixel density of the densest separation. The printer is preferrably a thermal video printer.
