To identify and evaluate fabric faults (1) at a circular knitter, the electrical signals from the non-contact sensor (2) are selected, shaped and amplified in a following circuit (3) to generate a suitable action at the machine through an evaluation logic (4) and a control (7). The machine is stopped, or there is at least one further attempt to knit a fault-free section, followed by a shut down if the fault is repeated. Also claimed is an assembly with at least one sensor (2), an amplifier (3) and an evaluation logic (4) to act on the machine control (7), arranged in succession.
