To separate fatty waste from the rinsing water of kitchen or dish washing machines from the food scraps, the contents of the separation vessel are placed in a holding container to be separated into water and solid components. The solids are removed, and the water content is fed back or out. The separation container is returned to the kitchen or washing appliance. Also claimed is an appts. with a separation container (5) with at least one lower outlet (10) which can be blocked. A catch vessel (6) at the outlet has a separator (14) where the contents can flow through.
