A remotely controlled switching unit (1) has an internal power supply, a signal identification system (14,15) and detectors (5,6). Connections (8,10) are made between and telephone line and an internal line (7). The output of the identification circuit is used to operate a switching stage (4) coupled to connect a line (12) to a computer. The computer is only connected to the power supply when an command signal is obtained.
