A regenerator suitable for heating and cooling machines, in particular those that operate with a regenerative gas circulation process, has a storage mass (12) through which the exothermic and endothermic medium, preferably a process gas, alternatively flows in opposite directions. In order to ensure both a low loss heat storage and a low loss heat emission, the storage mass (12) is subdivided into several successive sections (12a) in the flow direction that are mutually insulated against heat transmission.
