The evaporator has multi-chamber flat tubes (6) arranged with parallel sides and zigzag ribs (8) between them. The coolant passes between collector tanks (16,18) in the direction marked 'B', up and down the flat tubes, whereas the outside air passes between them in the direction marked 'A'. The coolant reverses its flow direction in chambers (22) adjoining the ends of the flat tubes, shaped out of the flat plate (24) covering each end of the array. The flat tubes are pushed into the flow reversal chambers up to a small distance greater than the plate thickness. The collector tanks are on the same side (top) of the array.
