A scanning apparatus (100) is disclosed in an imagesetter with an internal drum recording surface (106), having an improved carriage system (12) which is self-propelled and carries scanning optics (200) for recording an image including a spin motor/mirror (208, 212), a laser diode (202), and a focusing lens (206). The drive system is mounted to the carriage (12) to allow the carriage to move linearly inside the drum (102) as a self-propelled direct drive.
