The control circuit (4) provides a connection handling procedure at the transmitting end for connection management and for exchanging messages by other procedures. A connection handling procedure is used at the receiving end for connection management and message exchange by other procedures. The matrix switching bay (2) is coupled to a service control system (6). The control circuit (4) provides an additional procedure for the sole exchange of messages with the transmitter and receiver end connection handling procedures. The additional procedure exchanges messages with a service logic programme of the service control system (6) on a predetermined message and delivers data from the transmitting and/or receiving end connection handling procedures in dependence on the message output from the service logic programme.
