1,113,088. Superconductor switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 16 March, 1967 [2 May, 1966], No. 12295/67. Heading H1K. A switch for controlling the flow of persistent current in a superconductor circuit comprises a superconductor tape 10 of for example, Nb 3 Sn, wound in bifilar fashion around two mandrels 11, 13, each of which has a radius larger than the minimum bending radius of the tape, and electrical heating means such as a heating wire associated with the tape. In the embodiment the assembly is in a cooling housing 15 and the temperature of the coil can be raised above its superconducting temperature when desired by application of electric power to terminals 17 connected to the heaters. The switch may be connected across a superconductor coil and controlled so as to establish or cease the flow of persistent current in the circuit.
