1,147,330. Metal tubes. GENERAL CABLE CORP. 9 June, 1966 [11 Aug., 1965], No. 25679/66. Heading F2P. [Also in Divisions B3 and H1] A tube 10<SP>1</SP>, which may be applied as a sheath for a cable 22, is made from a metal strip 10 coated on at least one side with plastics and bent in a former 16 so that its longitudinal edges overlap and are spaced slightly apart so that the plastics can be softened by heat before the edges are moved together. The plastics is preferably applied to both sides of the strip 10 and the plastics within the seam heated by a gas torch 26. After heating the edges are held together and the tube 10<SP>1</SP> pulled through a die 34. The outside of the tube is cooled by an air jet 36. The tube 10<SP>1</SP> may be spaced from the core 22 prior to passing through the die. The tube 10<SP>1</SP> may pass through several sizing dies 54, 56 and through an extruder where an outer seamless jacket (64), Fig. 6 (not shown), of plastics, e.g. polyethylene or polyethylene copolymer, is applied to the tube at a temperature to soften the outer coating (71) on the tube to facilitate bonding. |
