Model-based control system for supercharging of IC engine

The regulator (130) responds to any discrepancy between the desired supercharging pressure (PSoll) and the actual value (PIst), with a signal (u) to the valve (120) in the bypass line (118) of the exhaust gas turbine (116). Parameters of a model of the engine (100) and supercharger are worked out by an identification unit (136) for a synthesizer (138). A limiter (132) of the output signal feeds the bypass valve driver (e.g. pulse-width modulator) (134). The model may be a second-order low-pass with dead time, and its parameters determined e.g. by a recursive least-squares fit.
