The apparatus connects a wire (18) with a contact element (20) by shaping clamp organs using pressing members of a crimp tool (16) arranged in a press (10). The apparatus has a drive motor (82). The latter is a single phase a.c. motor with an additional independent brake coil (96) actuated by a brake voltage. To operate the apparatus, a mains voltage is applied to the drive and auxiliary coil as an operating voltage. A constant voltage is applied to the brake coil. At the same time as the brake voltage is applied, the drive and auxiliary coils are disconnected from the operating voltage.
