A location system (10) for a vehicle moving within an area (52) comprising: a heading sensor (12); a speed sensor (20, 24); a storage device (18) for storing initial position data representing a navigation checkpoint location; a database (34) for storing records each include geographic information data representing selected aspects of the area; a processor (18) for estimating a current position signal based on heading signal values, speed signal (26) values, initial position signal values, and previous current-position signal values, wherein the current position signal values correspond to records stored in the database; a correction device for selectively correcting the current position signal based on selected position inputs which indicate an approximate vehicle position relative to the navigation checkpoint location; and an alerting device for indicating the vehicle has reached a selected region within the area based on the current position signal and the geographic information data.
