A simulator for teaching sailing comprises a hull 3 mounted for rotational movement about vertical and fore-aft axes, driving means turning the hull to and fro about the vertical axis in response to helm, means for heeling the hull about the fore-aft axis in response to a heeling controller, a main sheet 40 and a loading therefor which is responsive to a loading controller. The heeling means (Fig. 3) comprises an axle 6 having a driving pulley 7 connected thereto by a resilient coupling 8. The pulley is driven by an electric motor 9 which is caused to run in either direction by a heel control on the instructor's panel. The resilient coupling allows the pupil to reduce heel by moving his position. A wheel 16 in contact with the floor and driven by an electric motor 18 turns the hull about its vertical axis. The motor 18 is controlled via an electric circuit by the movement of the tiller, the circuit including a rheostat operated by the instructor to produce conditions representing change of speed and weather helm or lee helm effects. The main sheet 40 (Fig. 1), is connected with a boom 41 carried by a rotatable mast connected to a spring loaded plunger in a tube so that by hauling on the main sheet the pupil moves the boom against the action of the springs. The instructor is able to move the boom by controlling an electric motor which moves the tube.
