1,140,169. Machine tool details. KEARNEY & TRECKER CORP. 18 May, 1967 [14 June, 1966], No. 23261/67. Headings B3B and B3K. The tool spindle of a machine tool is so mounted that the tool receiving end is located in fixed position relative to a reference surface in the spindle head irrespective of temperature fluctuations. The spindle head 6 comprises a carrier member 9 of material of low coefficient of expansion providing a reference surface 14 to which there is bolted a bearing mount 19. Rearward expansion in the direction of arrow 76 of the bearing mount 19 displaces bearings 23, 24 sufficiently to compensate for expansion in the direction 72 of the part of spindle 34 which lies forwardly of the bearings. A rear bearing 44 is supported in the machine frame for limited axial movement in either direction. The tool spindle has a tapered socket 80 housing a collet 82 which may be moved axially for closing and opening by a draw-rod 83. A plate 78 on the forward end of the spindle provides an abutment against which a toolholder 85 may be engaged. |
