A boiler and circulation pump controller have sensing elements to monitor the various conditions which influence the operation of the heating system. The boiler (3) provides heated water at outlet (16), which may be circulated by the pump (6) to heat the room (19). Sensors (9,10,11), connected to the controller (8), detect the temperatures of the outside air, boiler water outlet and room air respectively. A preset reference temperature control (12) and a clock (13) are also provided. A diverter valve (16) and by-pass (14) cause circulation through the boiler to be omitted when sensor (10) detects a sufficiently high boiler water temperature.
