Halogenated biphenyls of the formula I in which Q is vinyl, CHF=CH-, CF2=CH-, cyclopropyl, CH2Hal, CHHal2 or CHal3, n is 2 to 7, E is -O- or a single bond, X is F, Cl, -CF3, -CN, -OCF3 or -OCHF2 and X and Z are each, independently of one another, H or F, can be used as components of liquid-crystalline media.
