PURPOSE:To obtain a dye which is stable to heat and light, gives a spectral absorption curve having a sharp main peak and diminished absorption in the other regions, has a high molecular absorbancy index, is easily synthesized, and has good solvent solubility by obtained a specific azomethine compound. CONSTITUTION:A coupler represented by formula I (wherein Z is a group forming a five- or six-membered nitrogenous heterocycle optionally substituted with one or more substituents which each is, e.g. an optionally substituted (cyclo)alkyl; R2 is an optionally substituted alkyl, etc.; and one of the cyclic substituents of R2 and Z has a Hammett's sigmarho value of -0.05 or larger) is oxidatively coupled with a compound represented by formula II [wherein X is N(R3R4) (where R3 and R4 each is an alkyl, an alkenyl,-OH, etc.); Y1 and Y2 each is CR (where R is H, an alkyl, N, etc.), provided that either of Y1 and Y2 is CN); and R1 is H, a halogen, an alkyl, etc.] in water or an organic solvent in the presence of an alkali. This reaction is conducted with the aid of an oxidizing agent or using an electrode. Thus, crystals of an azomethine compound represented by formula III (wherein R1, R2, X, Y1, Y2, and Z are as defined above) are obtained. The crystals are taken out by filtration and then recrystallized to obtain a dye. |
