PURPOSE: To adsorb a large amount of hydrocarbon over a wide range by setting at or below a specific value the maximum openings of a set of pores provided in a molecular sieve containing non-framework cations selected from combinations of ions of non-noble transition metals, rare earth oxides, and alkaline earth metals. CONSTITUTION: Exhaust gas is pass from an engine through an exhaust manifold and a line 11 to a certain light-off converter. An exhaust stream is passed through a thermostat control valve and a line 12 and made to bypass a line 14 at their starting time to direct it to zeolite. The zeolite is such that a molecular sieve containing non-framework cations selected from ions of non-noble transition metals, rare earth oxides, alkaline earth metals and combinations of these has a pair of pores with maximum pore openings not greater than 5.6 Å to remove hydrocarbons, which are then released to the outside through a muffler. Therefore, the hydrocarbons can be adsorbed in a large amount. |
