PURPOSE:To improve the startability of an engine, to reduce emission, and to secure good drivability by accurately controlling the gas phase air-fuel ratio in a combustion chamber. CONSTITUTION:A fuel injection valve 15 is arranged on the intake pipe 9 of an engine main body 1, and the fuel injected by the fuel injection valve 15 is taken into a combustion chamber 5 at a predetermined intake timing. Various sensors for detecting an engine driving condition including the material characteristic of a fuel are provided on the engine main body 1 and the fuel intake system. A fuel condition quantity in the engine in compliance with the engine driving condition is calculated by a control circuit 30 by using an atomization model, an intake pipe fuel behavior model and a combustion chamber fuel behavior model, and a fuel injection quantity for making the gas phase air-fuel ratio in the combustion chamber 5 a desired value, is calculated according to the fuel condition quantity. A cranking model is used by the control circuit 30 before initial explosion, and a firing model is used after the initial explosion. The fuel injection valve 15 is controlled by the control circuit 30 based on the fuel injection quantity.
