PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having superior characteristics with respect to running durability, weather resistance and preservability as a magnetic recording medium using a ferromagnetic metallic thin film as the magnetic recording layer and optimum for a digital videotape recorder or a high definition videotape recorder. CONSTITUTION:A ferromagnetic metallic thin film 2 is formed on a nonmagnetic substrate 1 and a carbon film 3 in which the concn. of at least one kind of element selected from among Si, P, S, Sn and In or the concn. of at least one of Sn and In and the concn. of B decrease from the outermost surface toward the depth direction is formed on the thin film 2. A lubricant layer 4 is further disposed.
