The soot is filtered out of the exhaust of a diesel engine by a ceramic soot filter 12. To regenerate the soot filter, the soot is burnt off with the aid of a burner 16 which has a swirl nozzle 17 which is supplied with fuel and air. The burner is operated with an overrich fuel/air mixture and a stable flame, burning without soot, is produced in the main combustion chamber 15. The combustion gases are mixed with the exhaust gases in a cross-flow mixer 39 and the residual fuel component is burnt off in an after-burning chamber 37, using the air contained in the exhaust gas. Regeneration can be carried out while the engine is running, without the pulsating engine pressure extinguishing the burner flame. ……
