Safety valve for artificial respirator

The valve has a housing (22) with a valve chamber (23) in which the main air line (2), from the artificial respirator, and a secondary line (26), leading to the atmosphere, opening into it. A valve closure member (32) is arranged within the chamber is able to move from a position that shuts off the main air line to an open position but is held in the open position by a spring (45). The closure member is joined to an operating surface which communicates with a control pressure chamber (48) of the valve housing. The operating surface is forced into a closed position by a pressure medium. A magnetic control valve (17) is provided that switches between a control pressure source (Ps) and the control pressure chamber of the main valve thus allowing the control medium access to the control pressure chamber. The control medium then overrides the force of the spring and closes the valve closure member and holds it in the closed position. The control valve is controlled by the artificial respirator and in normal operation is in a closed position.
