The operating control adjusts the ignition timing and the quantity of air supplied to the engine in given operating ranges of the engine, eg. to allow rapid warming of the exhaust gas catalyser from cold starting. The ignition angle signal (ZW) is combined with a correction value (dZW'), with similar correction of the air intake signal (LLW) via a second correction value (dLLW'), both correction values calculated, or weighted, in dependence on the engine operating condition, so that the second correction value compensates the variation in the engine torque resulting from the first correction value.
