A power steering system, which permits a safety drive condition by varying the steering force suitably corresponding to the vehicle speed, comprises a power cylinder (5) having a first fluid chamber (R1) and a second one (R2) partitioned by a piston (5a), a couple of passageways (41, 42) supplying fluid to the 1st. and 2nd. chamber according to the steering direction, a return passageway (43) returning it back to a fluid reservoir, and a rotary valve (4) connected with all the passageways and operated by fluid via a passageway (40) from a hydraulic pump. The system further includes a couple of by-passes (44,45) returning the fluid partly on the way of the supply passageways back to the fluid reservoir, a couple of solenoid valves (6a, 6b) arranged on the way of the by-passes, and an electric controller (8) adjusting the openings of the valves and controlling the quantity of the fluid to be returned back to the reservoir.
