The rivet consists of a cylindrical tube (1) serrated internally and externally by several circular grooves (4). A curved end (2) closes one of the ends of the tube, and the other is terminated by a head (3) which is larger than the diameter of the tube. A small hole (5) pierces this head, and the tube is filled with fluid. When the rivet is pushed through the hole drilled through two mating sheets of metal (7,8), the fluid is evacuated from the inside of the unit through the orifice in the head by a suitable tool.This causes the walls of the tube to retract so that they are forced against the external face of the rear sheet of metal, thus riveting the two sheets together.
