Luggage carrying roof rack for motor vehicles

The rack includes transverse bars (4) which, when not in use can retract into grooves in the roof (2) of the vehicle. The grooves are formed above supporting cross members of the roof. The end of each transverse bar locates in a "T" section locating grooves (8) in a support (3) of a longitudinal bar and is locked in stowed or working position in the groove by a spring loaded bolt. Transverse bars may be driven up and down by a concealed electric motor.
