Determining the liq. level, turbidity and opt. froth amount in an automatic washing machine or dish washer, a measuring system is used to direct one or more light beams onto the fictive liq. surface at an incident angle of greater than 0 and less than 90 deg., the emission and/or reception locations, the scattering and the attenuation of the reflections being determined by a receiver screen of the measuring system. Also claimed is a measuring system for carrying out the above method.
