PURPOSE: To remarkably improve the activity of a catalyst while retaining the same selectivity by incorporating an oxidizing agent into an aqueous solution of a platinum compound and specifying the average grain size, specific surface area, total porosity, residual ash content and pH of activated carbon. CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of a platinum compound is mixed with an aqueous suspension of activated carbon, this mixture is heated to 70-100 deg.C and the platinum compound is deposited with a base. The slightly soluble platinum compound is reduced with a reducing agent while maintaining the temperature and the resulting product is separated by filtration, washed, treated with a sulfidizing agent and newly washed to obtain the objective sulfidized catalyst containing platinum on activated carbon. This catalyst contains 0.1-5.0 wt.% platinum and 0.1-2 mol sulfuric acid based on 1 mol platinum. The aqueous solution contains an oxidizing agent and the activated carbon has 10-40μm average grain size, >500 m<2> /g specific surface area, >0.5 ml/g total porosity, <5 wt.% residual ash content and pH >5.
