The conveyor chain has fishplates (21) connected by pegs (23) and sleeves (24), the latter carrying rollers (25). There are carrier pieces (19) of which every pair in the chain has an integral fishplate section (22) and a contact section (29) joining them. The fishplate sections are joined by at least two extra transverse pegs (28), spaced a short distance away from the fishplates and on their sides facing the fishplates, the contact sections each have at least two recesses (26) forming a detachable joint with the transverse pegs. This detachable joint is a snap fitting. The actual contact surface (30) is made from an elastic material with a high friction coefficient.
