The device is intended to operate the kind of butterfly valves (15) found in the carburettor and exhaust systems of internal combustion engines. The valve plate (122) is held in the passageway (120), by means of a rotating shaft (121) extending across the passage, with the ends of the shaft projecting outwards from the pipe and perpendicularly to the pipe axis. The cable, to activate the valve, is fixed around a drum (123), which is free to rotate on the bearing (127), carried on the valve shaft. Rotation of the drum is transmitted via. the spring (130) to the cup bracket (128), which is fixed to the valve shaft by means of the nut (129).
