An NC programme is prepared in an integral form containing instructions for automatically selecting a tool, to be used for each of the steps and the machining instructions for the tools. The programme is stored in a memory of an NC apparatus. Then, the programme is converted into a second NC programme having an instruction which holds the tool to be used in the next step at a stand-by position. Then, the apparatus executes the numerical control based on the second programme. That is, the apparatus supplies the machine side with the tool number that has been read out for the next step prior to effecting the machining instruction for the present step so as to cause the automatic tool exchanger to carry a tool for the next step to the stand-by position, while operating the machining based on the machining instruction of the present step.
