A gas-tight maintenance-free cell or battery comprises positive nickel oxide electrodes having a fibrous structure, gas-impermeable separators, a fixed alkaline electrolyte, negative metal electrodes having a fibrous structure and a higher charging and discharging capacity than in the case of the positive electrodes, and electroconductive gas diffusion compartments.
