The combined seal and boot assembly 30 has a body portion 30a frictionally mounted on the end of a female splined steering shaft 25; a convoluted flexible boot portion 30b and sealing lips 30c which extend inwardly into resilient engagement with splines 21a formed on a male splined steering shaft 21. A metallic band 32 is provided to maintain the resilient engagement with the splines 21a. The sealing lips 30c engage with a higher friction portion 21b of the steering shaft 21 during normal use, wherein only a small amount of relative axial movement occurs between the shafts 21, 25. However, when the shafts 21, 25 are telescopically extended by a relatively large amount, eg during servicing the sealing lips 30c are moved axially off the higher friction portion 21b. <IMAGE> |
