The positioning device is for a lamp/table arrangement in which the lamp has a vertical upright tube (4) supported on a base formed by two horizontal telescopic arms. The horizontal arms pivot inside the upright tube to allow them to fold together or extend to an angle that forms feet to support the lamp. The rod end can terminate in an anti-slip foot (10) or in a fitting (18) that allows attachment of the rod to the frame of an item of furniture. The upright tube has an internal track with a carrier (8) running on the track. The carrier is driven manually or by an electric motor. The upright tube has a slot along the upper part of its length to allow an arm extending from the carrier to rise and fall as the carrier rises and falls. The arm supports a table (11). A light (40) is attached to the top of the upright tube by an arm (34,37) which extends over the table.
