In a process controller 32 for on-line control of a printing press, a feedforward process control model 52 which controls the process is only updated if a disparity between the desired and actual process results 44, 48 is not due to a known cause or condition 78, 46, 82, 84. The feedforward process model 52 is embodied as a neural network to produce predicted process results for selected control settings or conditions 78, 46, 82, 84. These predicted results are compared 67 to the actual process results 48 to determine whether or not any discrepancy that exists between the actual results 48 and the desired results 44 is due to a known cause or condition 78, 46, 82, 84 that can be corrected without correcting the model 52. <IMAGE>
