[Also in Division G1] In apparatus for measuring variations in the radius of a tyre (known as "radial runout") the average of the runout signals is analysed to provide the first harmonic component only. The two runout signals from the linear motion potentiometers (Fig. 7) are averaged (Fig. 9, not shown) and fed to amplifiers A1, A2 (Fig. 10) with switch S1 closed. When the switch is opened by a sequence controller, the D.C. component of the input signal E 3 , stored in capacitor 37, is deducted from the input signal and amplified at A3 to be gated by a further sequence controlled switch S2 to restrict the output to one cycle only. This is fed to an analogue oscillator (Fig. 11) comprising, a summing amplifier A4 and two RC integrating amplifiers A5, A6 whose capacitors C are normally discharged through photoresistors 41, 42 held at low resistance values by lamp L. When the lamp is not lit, the single cycle input signal causes the circuit to produce a sinusoidal output voltage which is 90 degrees out of phase with the runout first harmonic voltage but with the same frequency and with a proportional amplitude. The sinusoidal voltage E, (Fig. 12), is fed to an amplitude detector, charging capacitor 44 to its peak value with transistors Q2, Q3 normally non-conducting. A small voltage is added via resistor 47 to compensate for the "Knee" characteristic of input diode D1, and the connected voltage amplified at A8 and indicated on meter AM. A cyclic reset signal from the sequence controller causes transistors Q2, Q3 to conduct and reset meter AM to zero. The measured amplitude is compared in amplifier A9 with a present voltage from potentiometer 46 to energize an alarm relay if it is exceeded. The sinusoidal voltage E 9 is also fed to an amplifier A10 (Fig. 13) which saturates when the voltage passed through zero with negative slope, corresponding to the maximum value of the runout voltage signal. This condition causes capacitor 51 to feed a positive pulser to transistor Q6 which conducts and energizes a relay TM (Fig. 2) whose contacts RC2 energize means for marking the location of maximum runout on the tyre. The sequencing of the measurement operation is effected by a controller (Fig. 16, not shown) fed with a pulse train derived from a magnetic pick-up associated with the rotating tyre.</p>
