1,182,776. Polyolefin derivatives. CASTROL Ltd. 22 June, 1967 [28 June, 1966], No. 29050/66. Addition to 1,121,641. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C5] Oil-soluble polymer derivatives having a long saturated or unsaturated aliphatic chain linked through an amide or imide group to a group of formula -R 2 B(Q) 3 where B is a straight or branched group of alternating NH and R 2 groups containing 1 to 20 nitrogen atoms, Q is H or S0 3 H, the ratio of nitrogen atoms to SO 3 H groups being not less than 1 to 1, and R 2 is a group of formula -CR 2 CR 2 -, where R is hydrogen or an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl or alicyclic group, may be prepared by the corresponding long chain carboxylic acid with a sulphonic acid or internal salt prepared by polymerizing an aziridine compound in the presence of sulphurous acid. The acid may be prepared by reacting a polyolefin, preferably polyisobutylene of molecular weight 700 to 3000, with maleic anhydride, or by condensing a chlorinated polyolefin with acrylic or methacrylic acid. The aziridine compound may be ethylene, propylene, C - ethyl ethylene, C- hexadecyl ethylene, 2,3 - diethyl ethylene or 2,3-diethyl propylene imine. The products are useful as dispersant additives in lubricating oils. Examples describe (I) the reaction of poly-isobutylene with maleic anhydride, the polymerization of propylene imine in the presence of sulphurous acid and the reaction of the products; reaction products of polyisobutenylene succinic anhydrides with (II-V, VII and IX polypropylene imine sulphonic acids and (VI, VIII and X) polyethylene imine sulphonic acids; and the reaction of chlorinated polyisobutylene with acrylic acid and of the resulting polyisobutenyl propionic acid with (XI) a polypropylene imine sulphonic acid. |
