The safety unit consists of two horizontal platforms - a lower one (2) on wheels (5,6), at least one of which (5) has a drive motor (8), and an upper one (10) which is connected to the lower one by a central shaft which allows them to rotate relative to one another about a vertical axis. The upper platform has telescopic feet (15) which can be retracted or deployed and supports a framework (20) with a safety net which can be deployed horizontally to catch people if they should fall. At least one of the wheels of the lower frame is steerable, and it can be remotely controlled. The telescopic legs on the upper platform can be in the form of power cylinders.
