The steering column comprises a tube in which the shaft with steering-wheel turns. A plastics safety component engages in a recess in the column, and shears off under a force acting in the tube lengthwise direction. The component is formed by a protrusion (14) from a guide strip (11). The tube can be arranged to slide in a mounting on the car bodywork when shearing takes place. The strip (11) which is of plastic can be fitted between the mounting (8) and a guide, being prevented from sliding. The protrusion on it fits in a recess (15) in the mounting or guide (9), while these engage together via a dovetail-section guide.
