PURPOSE: To provide a multiplier with which both a real number and a complex number can be multiplied at a high calculation speed. CONSTITUTION: A partial product is formed from two supplied 2m digit numbers Z1 and Z2 by a multiplier mp, the Z1 and Z2 are respectively divided into the 1st, 2nd and 3rd areas of (m) digits and the 4th area of (m) digits, and the partial products of the 2nd and 4th areas, 1st and 3rd areas, 2nd and 3rd areas and 1st and 4th areas respectively form 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th subfields S1, S2, S3 and S4. A controller st selectively switches the multiplier from real number multiplication to complex number multiplication and allocates basic weight to the respective subfields. In the case of real number multiplication, the partial products of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th sub-fields S1, S2, S3 and S4 are added through a positionally exact method by an adder ad corresponding to the weight as the result of respective partial products and in the case of complex number multiplication, subtraction and addition are performed. |
