A welding device adapted while feeding a welding torch along the weld line, to oscillate the torch across the seam and to provide an adjustable pause at the end of each stroke comprises a carriage 7, a transverse slide 8 mounted thereon and carrying the welding torch, a motor 12 arranged to drive the slide 8 in either direction by means of selectively operable electromagnetic clutches 18, 19, which transmit drive from motor 12 through bevel gears 14, 15 or 14, 16 to a rack-and-pinion drive 21, 20 for the slide 8, and control means comprising an adjustably pivotally mounted lever 22 which is deflected by movement of the slide 8 to operate the clutches alternately through electrical switch means thereby determining the end points of the strokes of the slide 8; adjustable time delay means in the switchgear for the clutches provides an adjustable pause at the ends of the strokes of the slide 8 and thus of the welding torch. The lever 22 has a triangular head portion 39 arranged to deflect a projecting member 29 of a snap-over switch device controlling the clutches 18, 19. The pivot 23 of the lever 22 is adjustable in position to adjust the relative position of switch member 29 within the triangular head 39; thus, e.g. with the switch member 29 close to the apex of the triangle 39 only a small movement of the slide 8 and thus of lever 22 is required to operate the switch and thereby reverse the direction of the welding torch. Motor 12 is of variable speed in order to vary the speed of the oscillatory movement of the torch. Reference is made to gas-shielding of the welding torch and to the continuous supply of welding wire. |
