Control of fungi and/or bacteria using: (a) a carboxy-substd. benzofuran, indole or tetralin deriv. (I) or ester and/or salt; (b) a carboxy-substd. indane deriv. (II) or ester and/or salt; or c) a para-substd. benzaldehyde or benzoic acid (III) or salt; in combination with conventional carriers and adjuvants is new: A = a 6 membered ring or a 5-membered opt. unsatd. heterocyclic ring substd. by COOH and opt. 1-4C alkyl; R = H or 1-4C alkyl; X, Y = 1-4C alkyl; or X=Y= -C=C(A)(B); A, B= H or 1-4C alkyl; and unoccupied positions on an aromatic ring are opt. substd. by OH, halo and/or 1-4C alkyl.
